Tbb Maori.—The hired Transport ship Maori, •Captain Roberts, which vessel has on board the left "wing of the 43rd Regiment, and has been detained in ■harbour for several days, through adverse -winds, •dropped down to the Heads yesterday, and no doubt by daylight this morning would have a good offing. A large number, of friends and acquaintances of tho passengers accompanied tho Maori as far as the Heads. We heartily wish hor a speedy and prosperous voyage home. The Tasmania* Maid- —The p.s. I'asmanian Maid, Captain Jackson, which arrived on Sunday ; night last from Wangarei, went alongside the Custom House-street Wharf yesterday, for the purpose of undergoing n thorough overhaul to her hull, machinery, &c. The s.s.. Beautiful Star, Captain Morwick, came alongside the Wharf yesterday to load for Napior, and will sail at noon to-day.

The' barque Frederick Bassil, Captain "Whitta, sailed yesterday for Valparaiso, in ballast, and 7 passengers. The schooner Morning Star, Captain Uayea, arrived from Wangaroa on Saturday morning last, daring the height of the N.E. gale, and sought shelter from it under Kauri Point. She brings a cargo of shinglos, timber, &c. The schooner General Cameron, Captain T. Joyce, sailed yesterday for IJuesell, with a general car»o and several passengers. She will be followed by the regular trader Sea Breeze, as iioon as she has repaired the damages sustained by the recent heavy gale.

The P.N.Z. and A.TC.M". Co.'s s.s. Lord Ashley, Captain Worsp, sails again for the South at noon ' to-morrow.

Thb Tawkka.—The clipper schooner Tawera, Captain Joseph Kennedy, arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon, from Napier via Poverty Bay, after a very tempestuous passage, and bringing a cargo of 18 head cattle, several pigs, GO caSu\ apples, &e. The Tawera left Poverty Bay on ThursQaylast, the 29th ultimo, and experienced strong northeasterly winds "up to Friday evening, when it suddenly shifted to the south and south-east.Vfnd blew a perfect hurricane, during which several feaila were blown to pieces, and the fore yard carriid clean in - :twp, /The vessel was then hove-to off fee Mare Island, from 5 o'clock on Saturday evenirfgto daylight on Sunday morning, when Captain Kennedy '""found'himself off the Great Barrier, and in great danger of foundering, as the sea was niaking a complete breichover the vessel, and-it was impossible to pat on the hatches on account of the hold being full of bullocks. On Sunday morning tho gale moderated, and the vessel was ran for the Tamaki, where she

arrived tJI safe at 3 p.m.; discharged her live stock yesterday morning, and then came up harbour. Capt. Kennedy reports that the Tawera behaved admirably throughout the gale, and, as a proof of her good seagoing; qualities, ,we may state that out of 18 head of catfclei in her hold, only one beast died through the heavy gale. ; Tie schooner Jane, Capt. Faulkner, 14 days oat from this port, arrived at Poverty Bay on TJuuiiday last) and was to load again for here.

Tho heavy .North East gale which prevailed here' on Saturday and Sunday last, as we aurmised'in our. last, blow itself out on Sunday evening. ; Although; the wind was from the same quarter yesterday, it was ; very moderate,' and tho crews of . the various injured vessels enabled to repair demages., Propagations were also made to raise tho sunfcon vessels Karion and New "JTear, which will no,dqubt prove successful to-day, should the weather lseep fine. Wo liave heard, wo are glad to say, of no further shipping casualties tlian those enumerated in ycstorday's issue. _ THIS MARY SHEPHERD. Tho ship Mary Sliephord, Capt. Croot, was yesterday officially surveyed by Capt. Spain, )1.X., Resident Transport Officer, assisted by Mr. Niecol, ship-builder, North Shore, both gentlemen expressed themselves as being highly pleased with the appearance and capacit.v of the ship for tho service for which Bhe has been tendered. Tho latter repeatedly expressing his admiration of tho superior workmanship and material used in the construction of tho ship. Tho Saloon accommodation has not been surpassed, and wo might vonturo to say, not equalled by any vessel yet taken up for tho conveyance of Troops from this port. The Mary Shepherd is to bo fitted up forthwith, and wo understand is to be ready for inspection on the 18th inst. Tho Troops will not embark until after the arrival of the mila steamer from Sydney, due on tho 22nd inst. During the day some officers and ladies of the 40th Regt., visited the ship, and wore unanimous} in thoir praises of the accommodation and clca'nly appearance of the vessel in general,
