Brazil. — Her Majesty's packet, the Linnet, Lieutenant Cogh'an, from Brazil, arrived at Falmouth on Monday, having sailed from Rio de Janeiro on the 21st of February, whence she has come direct, bringing on freight, in gold and diamonds, about £8,000. Mr. Ellis was. expected to leave Rio about the beginning of March, in *>er Majesty's ship Malabar, for this country, having been unable to effect a treaty of commerce, &c, with the Brazilian Government, although at the moment, or just prior to the packet's departure, an application had been made by the officials to our minister to detain the Linnet for three days longer, which. request had been refused. An announcement of the failure of two influential houses for very large amounts has been received by this conveyance, which failures were followed by the defalcations of several coffee-dealers. The exchange was firm at27d., the first houses having appeared nxious to draw at that rate ; and the amount of transactions for this packet wa* considera--ble. Commodore Purvis, in her Majesty's ship Alfred, with the Partridge brig, and Ardent steamer, had left Rio de Janeiro for Monte Video.
Trade in Paisley. — So far as ample employment for weavers and busy preparations for the fall sales are concerned, trade here never was brisker than it is at present, and from the limited quantity of goods that can be got forward, owing to the number of weavers who have left the town, ■ there 'is every reason to expect that the hope of the manufacturers will be fully realized. In addition to the usual shawl trade of the place, considerable business is now doing by many of our manufacturers in the tartan trade, particularly in the lighter and finer descriptions of these goods. The demand for weavers at tartans is particularly brisk, and while they are too poorly paid to afford a wage to grown up men, to women and boys they afford ready employment and fair remuneration. — Glasgow Paper. ' ' <• A thief was discovered the other day hidden under a bed in a grocer's house, Calto'n, Glasgow, by means of a cat. Puss was ob- served to 'arch her back and thicken her taiU* into a brush, in anger and alarm at something concealed from view, and upon inquiry a woman was found underneath, a notorious character and thief,' who had been imprisoned five times for robbery.
