Yachting Notes.
By Skipper.
Tj N incident that caused some discus„sion amongst yachtsmen lately • was the fitting of a new bowsprit 327 ft lone on the yawl Matangi. Many '•of the older boating-men-hazarded the that there was too much head on, her for the trip up the coast to "Auckland. However, she started, '. and iad got as far as PSlliser Bay. when- the t port stay to her bowsprit carried away, ■and she returned toport. The spar was reduced by- 4ft, and she. again left for : Auckland, but returned to port again, having. met some very heavy weather. . Yachting men, however, were of the opinion that she never ought to have turned tail because a few seas came over her. Evidently some'of the crew were i-cf -the same opinion, as on Monday evening one of tfieir number was inveigled aspore, and during his absence the. yacht made a fresh start. He returned to the boaf harbour to find-his duds ashore and ./the boat gone.. It is \- to be "hoped she , .jwill make a. record trip up- the coast,' aa 'f -ebe had .everything in her favour-—good .-spars,' sails and rigging, - also, an'efficient •engine to help her along in a^calm. •In the course of a week or so the '„ mumber of. yachts, afloat will have largely. Increased, and. things; will begin to hum in the boat x harbbur. My sympathy, is. cordially .extended to jMt. Bucholz/-he.[".unfortunately having broken his leg whilst working at ;yacht WairerefNb. 2 in : Balena Bay. > :>The auxiliary cutter Seagull: started •for. Chatham. -Island ,last. week under her ■engine,' and 'we ought r to hear of her arrival shortly. ■■■■-■'
