FIRE AT DEDWOOD.
Ov Saturday morning last, about halfpast two o’clock, a four-roomed dwel-ling-house at Dedwood, occupied and owned by Mr. J* Maun, was burned down to the ground, leaving only the brick chimney and half the fence standing. The alarm of (ire appears first to have been given by constable Green, who was on duty in Mobsonstrect ; and Mr. Commissioner Xaughton at once took horse and rode out to the scene of the conflagration. Upon arrival, he found that the inmates of the burning house had escaped unhurt, and taken refuge in a neighbour's dwelling; (lie only portion of their household goods saved from destruction
being a few boxes of dollies and some carpenter’s tools. Before the house was entirely consumed a few members of the lire brigade put in an appearance; but from the absence of any great supply of water, and the firm hold which the fire had obtained of the house, it was judged to be futile to attempt to save the building. Mr. Maun and family are slated to have retired to bed at their usual time on Friday night, hut shortly after two o’clock on Saturday morning were awoke from experiencing a great heat in the bedroom. Mr. Maim at once rose from bis bed, and then discovered that the bouse was on fire; the blaze passing through the roof of the the bouse, and the bedroom being full of smoke. The bouse was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £2OO by the mortgagee, but Mr. Mann’s furniture was uot insured.
