THE GOVERNOR'S PROCLAMATION.

T* the Editor of the New Zealander. Sir, —The colony has great reason to rejoice that Governor Sir G. Grey has taken at length (while uncontrolled by ministerial irresponsibles) such a firra stand with the natives, and while holding out the olive branch in the one hand he holds in the other the power to compel compliance with his just demands. Before the Waikato campaign commenced Sir G. offered to the rebels similar terms to those now tendered, and their non-com-pliabce with these terms has resulted in serious disaster to them ; they have been defeated in every engagement, and driven completely out of the Waikato country, anil we now hold military possession. If the last campaign resulted so disastrously, it is hoped that, before allowing another to begin—which will certainly result in more serious consequences still—they will submit to the terms proposed ; if not, it will prevent for ever the English public from saying a single word on the injustice of our treatment of these misguided people. The Colonial Treasurer, while in England, pledged himself that Ministers would co-operate with the Governor in carrying out measures calculated to bring to a speedy termination the calamitous state of public affairs which now exists in this colony. We look with some anxiety to see these ; pledges faithfully carried into effect. Yours, &c., A Looker-on. THE LOAN AND OUR FINANCES. To the Editor of ihe Ne w-Zealandeb. Sir, —Generally speaking I care little to correct typographical errors, taking it for granted that the public will understand the intent, but where figures are concerned it becomes necessary to be correct. By a misprint I am made in my last letter to state that £lO each on 20,000 persons adds £20,000 additional capital to the resources of the colony, whereas it should of course have been £200,000. There are also one or two minor misprints, but of trifling import. Old Practical.
