OAMARU RIFLES, BELT COMPETITIONS, FINAL MATCHES. , Tho Onmaru Rifles fired tho concluding mutches of their belt series on the beach rnngo on Thursday afternoon. Tho lirst match (7 shots at 500 and 600 yards) was won by Private Bennett (61), with Sergt. Smith (60) second, while Color-Sergeant Dcwar won tho rnngo prize with 57. In tho second match (7 shots at 700 yards) Corporal Lapslio came out oii top with 31, l'rivato Bonnett second with 26, and Color-Servant Dcwar thoirango piizo with 26, The weather on tho whole was good, but a thick haze from the beach mndo (he shooting rather difficult at 700 yards,

The nggrcgnte, 3 shoots at 20Q yards, 3 n t WW yards, 2 at COO yards, and 1 at 700 yards, was won by Col.Scrgt. Dcwar by three points from l'rivato Bennett, after n close competition right through the shoots. PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN. Tor Press Associatiqn, Duiiedin, May 21. The annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held to-day. The annual report stated that the number of cases dealt with was 111, as compared with' 90 last year, aud 107 in tho preceding year. The cases includo 10 of ill-usage and cruol neglect of children, 11 of runaway husbands, 19 of drunken busbands, ono drunken wife, and one drunken mother, somo cases of affiliation (settled mostly out of Court), whilst tho remainder woro divided amongst cases of'tmmanagablo daughters, petty thefts by girls, complaints re noglcct to pay for maintenance of children beforo tho Infant Lifo Protection Act como into forco, neglect o/ ch'ildrcn to provide for parents, and cases of urgent distress, The saddest wero cases of young girls, mothers under sixteen, for : whom no adequate redress could bo ' obtained owing to limitations of time'allowed .by the Act under which the proceedings could bo taken, Tho following resolution was carried: " That it. is highly desirable and necessary that female factory inspectors bo re-appointed, and that a deputation intorviow the Minister ol labor on tho matter."
