HOW TO MAKE A FILTER.
The question ot a pure and wholesome supply of water in the summer time is an important one. Here are some directions for making a filter at a trifling cost. Take an ordinary earthenware garden flower pot, cover the hole with zinc gauze, or fit it with n piece of glass tube and a sponge. Obtain some rather fine gravel, wnsh it well, and put it in the pot to the height of throe inches ; next buy two pounds of animal charcoal, and after well washing it by pouring boiling water on it. several times, and allowing it to s'lttle, put it on the gravel and press it well down, making about four inches of charcoal. Then take some white sand and after washing it thoroughly, put it on the charcoal ; and finally, some more gravel mny be placed on this. All filters tend to become clogged in tini". To clean the whole filter, pour in four or live ounces of Condy's fluid and water, to which some sulphuric ncid hnr> boon added. Subsequently pour through the Olter two or three gallons of rain water and then it is rendv for use.
Another method of cleaning a fdter is to take out the gravel, sand, and charcoal. Wnsli these in a solution of Condy's fluid in hot water. Dry the separate ingredients in the oven and build up once more.
