THE ENGINEERS' STRIKE (By Electric Telegraph.-Copyright.) (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Received January 16, at 10 a.m. Adelaide, January 16.

Iho secrotaiyof the local b anch of the Ei)ginecrs' Association lus received information from headquarters that it has been decided that m-mbers could return to the Adelaide Company's steamers \ meeting of local engineers confirmed the decision.

Rceived January lb, at lU.lo a.m. Sydney, January 14. The engineers as a body are little short of disgusted at the efforts to secure better terms^ and express their feelings in no measured language. " Know ing w h.it wo know now," said one of them, "and that an honorable understanding with the owners is impossible, a\o relied on their word, and made the inconvenience to the public as light as possible, and this is our reward. We ought to have paralysed the entire triffic, aud then perhaps would have been listened to with somo effect. We have been outgeneralled, and that is the whole fact." These sentiments are echoed by most of the engineers, who regard their defeat as a mosc crushing one. As in most cases of this kind the leaders come in for hard words. It is said that the power of the owners wore underrated, and that throughout the leadeis showed a lamentable failure to grasp the true situation This, together with the misunderstanding with the Wellington branch and the unscrupulous conduct of some Melbourne owners in bringing pressure to bear on their old servants, is given as the reason for defeat. That pressure, the engineers hold, was more than these old servants could stand, and one man who was seen last night stated that the Melbourne Committee said that it was absolutely necessary to close khe strike before further defections took place.
