VIOTORIAN STATISTICS.

Tho following figures arc taken from Mr Ilayter'a statistical nummary of Victoria, iv connection with the Statistical lleyistcr : There weie in Victoria, on the yist December, 1884, 901,270 persons, of whom 510,05'J were males, and 450 017 were females. The births durinj, 1884 numbered 28,850, and the deaths 13,305. There were 7, 218 marriages during that year. The number of persons arriving liy sea during that time was 72,202, while 58 061 departed by sea. The general revenue for the year was L5,934,G87. and the expenditure was L 5,715,293. 409,408 acres of Crown land were sold, realising L 585,099. There were 2,323,493 acres ot land under cultivation, and the live Btock of the colony consisted of 293,840 horses, 1,287,945 cattle, 10,037,412 sheep, and 234,347 pigs. Iv the 1342 post offices of the colony, 33,403,884 letters and 15,142,CG7 newspapers were dealt with. 1980 vesßih arrived inwards, equal to 1,509,169 tons; 1989 vessels departed, equal to 1,582,425 ton 9. Eight vessels, equal to IG7 tons, were built in the colony during that period. The total value of the imports was L 1 9,201 ,033, of which breadstufl's were worth L 27.968.

The total value oi exports was L16,050,4C5, ol which there was wool to the value of LG,342,887; tallow, L 256.686; hides and skins, L148.G38 ; and breadstuffs, L 1,769,620. There were 778,6180z of gold raised in the colony during 1884, valued at L 3,114,472 ; and the public debt at the end of the year stood at L27,52G,GG7.

Sea-water has been converted into a beverage. A little citric acid or citrate of silver ia added to the briny liquid. Chloride of silver ia precipitated, and a harmless miueral water ia produced. An ounce of citrate readers a half piut of water drinkable.
