THE BUSH FIRES. (BY TELEGRAPH.)
New Plymouth, January 19. At a meeting of the Relief Committee to-day a sub- committee was appointed to confer with a sub-committee of the Hawera district to ascertain the amount of damage sustained by the fire. Major Alkinßon, Colonel Trimble, and Me S*iauel were appointed to apply to the Government to supplement the subacriptious received by a grant. It is novf balievad that the greater part of the mininderstanding between the New Plymouth committee occurred owing to a mistake in ouo of the telegrams sent by the agent of the Prcea Association thoro. In the telegram the words " locally subscribed" appear instead of tho words " already subscribed." That gave a false impression to the colony that what had been raised in Taranaki alone would be sufficient. It is probable the Hawera and New Plymouth committees will act in unison. Mr Skinner, surveyor, handed in his report of the estimated damage at the meeting of tho Relief Committee today, but the contents are not yet made known.
