October 10. Sailed — Herald, for Grey mouth. A fair number of applications for space have been received from intending exhibitors at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. At the criminal session Thomas Franci* Holt, late secretary of Hoiensville Fores ters' Lodge, was Luud guilty of embezzlement. Sentence was reserved. Queen Nako, of Raratonga, and party, it is understood, have received invitations from the Premier to visit Wellington, but prefer awaiting the arrival of the ColonialSecretary at Auckland. Tney will visit Tawhiao at Whatiwhatihoe. The Government are giving free passes on the railways. Ail the party wear European clothing, and Tapai (keeper of the Great Seal) speaks English. The mayor has shown the visitors round the city. A glove contest between P. Matthews and W. Wilkinson for L2O a side took place last night. Matthews undertook to knock his opponent out of time in four rouuds. Matthewo, at the start, forced the fight in very fierce and determined blows, knocking Wilkinson down several timea on the stage. After about half-a* minute of the time had gone one timekeeper declared that the specified ten seconds had elapsed and the judges de. dared that Matthews had won the match. W. H. Wakeham, for murderously assaulting his wife, was sentenced at the Supreme Court this morning to two yeara' penal servitude.
