TO TUB EDITOR.
Sir,—" numauitas" takes via back to early Bible ages for the existence of this evil, but he cannot point to any period of Hb history in which Divine punishment of it has not been made clear. Wo agree wHh him that this is not n b\\\ jeot for the "PhariHeo" or tho "Sniveller." To what particular sect this latter character belongs " HnmanitaFi" hns not made clear. It ie, however, a subject for all those who are interested in the moral growth of our community, and it does not follow that because we would circumscribe the evil wo nre neceesarily disposed to be uncharitable or unchristian in our bearing towards the " unfortunates" who stand immediately connected with it. On the other hand we must carefully'guard against such a tolerance of them as would art?uo that wo are blind to tho evils arising out of their nefarious practices ; and if society would pronounce a truo estimate of those who patronise th« evil it would prove, what hns been questioned, that it still has moral life, and I am convinced would lead us up to a higher platform of rnoralp. "Why ahould not society brnnd tho man who encompasses the ruin of one to protect whom all manly powers should be actively called forth 1 If, aa " Humanitas" palntß the picture, the unfortunate whoso lostjinnoconce carrioß Bnawful punishment with her down to the grave, what can be adequate punishment for the being — only a man in Bemblanco— who imposes this doom upon her, nnd will not even make effort to lighten the sorrow? " Humnnitne's" statement with referonce to Timoru in a very serious charge, and should be made only after positive proof. This is not forthcoming ; neither tho polico reports nor the taw court reports from that town at all show this state of things to exist, nnd I do hope tho public will not accept unchallenged a charge so serious, and mado pgainat an entiro community.
