MELBOURNE MARKETS.

The Australasian of the 25th ultimo reports m followi : The last week closed with breadstuff 3 quiet at Friday's rates. Freight* hence to England were offering on Saturday at 10i per ton to fill, but with wheat at 5a Bd, even Chat low freight would not leave a profit Un Monday little business oould be done Some enquiry wat experienced for wheat in the forenoon, but as buyers in almost all cases oould not be got to offer more than 5s 7d — which holders refused, requiring 5s 7Jd — a duller fueling than usual in consequenoe prevailed. Tow trds the afternoon, however, a better indication of a de*ire to operate was evince I, and accordingly a line of 3 000 bags was taken up at 5s 7i<J, «x stor«, Flour likt*

wiio had attention, a pmiflla of 100 tons having changed hand* at Ml 15-4, besides numorous 10 and 20 ton parcels also quitted Operations in wheat on Tuesday were of very little account ; tho sales effootod either privatoly or at auction, howevor olosoly tho market may be watched, wero not of sufficient importance to attraot notice, and there was undoubtedly a muoh easier foeliug abroad. At the auotion saloi the quantity offered amounted in the aggregate to 4,000 bags, of which only 2,000 bags found buyoia at from 5s 4Jd to 5s 6Jd. It was also stated that 5a 7d was offered for 2,000 bags. Whother or not, the price offered privatoly has not gone oror 5s 6Jd this afternoon, and tlviugh no business has transpired at that figure, yot we hear of a parcel of 1,110 bags fair milling, not quite suitablo for skipment, having changed hands at 5s 6(1, ex store, and a lino of 1,000 bags has likewise been sold at 5s 6d, delivered in Geelnnq. Flour was likowiio a shade less firm. We heard of LU 12s 61 having been offered at auotion for 20 tons and declined ; and at the same timo of the quittanoe privately of 40 tons at that quotation. To-day flour is dull.; LU 10s was otfnred and refused Wo quote Ml 12s 6d. Wheat ii al<o quiet. About 2,730 bags «vere sold at 5s 3J 1 to 5s 6Jd. the bulk of good at tho latter price ; two lota of superior, however, realised 5s 7d. Outside nothing has been allowed to transpire, but offers aro making at 5s 6d and 5s 6Jd, ex store, without being accepted. Since business oponed on Monday feeding grains have been moving steadily. Oats on hat day were quoted at 3s 3 1 to 3s sd, and 3* 6d was required for milling. A parcel of 300 bags was sold at 3s Id to 3s 2>l in bond for export. On Tuesday values wore fairly maintained under tho intluence of a steady domand. Publicly about 1,600 bags were disposed of at prices ranging from 3s 3d tf> 3s 5d for fair to stout feeding. To-dsy more attention was given to grain Of 4 000 bags offered publicly, nearly 3,000 were sold at 3s 3d to 3* sd, and 3s 6Jd. Privately 200 bags were placed at 3s 4d, and a smaller parcel at 3s 6Jd. Malting barley wai moving off quiotly on Saturday. Sues of medium were mentioned at 4s 3d, while prime samples oouli hardly be obtained under 4s Gil. Sales of feeding wero mndo at 3s 9d. Milting was on Monday quoted at 4s 3d to 4s 6d. 250 bags Cape feeding wero placed at 3s BJd. The market was muoh duller on Tuesday, and though no actual change in quotation of 4s 6d for prime malting could be reported, yot buyers did not come forward over readily, and to press saloi would only have led to a reduction iv values ; 600 bags were quitted at auction, when 4s to 4s 4d was realised for malting, according to quality, and 3s BJd for feeding Today 250 bigs Cape ferding were sold privately at 3-t BJd, ami at auction 1,000 bags milting at 3s 3Jd to 4s 5Jd. Maize is irregular ; 5s 5d was offered publicly on Tuosday, and refused, yet we find thit 200 bags wero cleared off privately at 5s 4Jd. On the other hind, as the market in Sydney is still quoted 6rm at 5s 3d, there aro holders here who would not accept evch|b) 6d, and refuse to name a price at all. To day, howevor trade ■ales have been made at 5s 6d, whilst 300 bags faulty have been placed at 5s Id to 5s ! 2d. Bran commands Is 6d ; pollard, Is 4Jd and Is sd. In other grain we have no change to report. Concerning the samo market, the Argus of tho 28th Maroh says : < 'porations in breadstuff* pros nt that market in an improved position. Flour is firm at LI 1 15s for country brands in Melbourne, At thin figure we hear, amongst other business, of 50 tons having been quitted. A parcel of 30 tons has been sold at LI 1 17s 61, f 0.b., while for another line of s') tons, Ll2, f.o.b , has been obtained. For spot parcels tho quotation is LU 15s. Wheat has likewiso had a conkidertble inquiry, and higher rates have been established. In one instance a parcel of 600 bags was quitted at 5s 7£d «x store. Subsequently, some 2000 bags wero taken at 5s B>l ex store, while in another oaso some 4000 bags found buyers at 5s 8d ex store and station. Oats are very firm and likely to improve ; we continue to quoto 3s 3d to 3s 6 I for feeding, and 3s 7d for milling A line of 380 bags has been sold in bond on private terms ; 3s 6d, duty paid, was o (To red for a considerable parcel stout feeding, but refused, 3s GJd being required. Caps barley has been placed at 3s 9J, and a lino of 1000 bags good malting has been taken up at 4a 3d.
