THE N. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION'S SHOW. ( To the Editor of the North Otago Times. )
Sir, — I am only a plain man, and in my education there was never included 'the facility of acquiring a knowledge of that beautiful ai*t of " saying one thing and meaning another." Ihave, consequently (to my detriment perhaps), the i happy or unhappy, (as the ease may be) habit of calling a spade a spade. I must own. also, to having ■ comparatively little , sympathy ' with that class of people ,V r ho, like those of which the ancient church of | Laodicea was mainly "composed, are neither cold nor hot ; but the nauseating, intermediate, lukewarm. It does ' not, therefore, cause 'me the slightest surprise that I am unable to feel even • one little regret that my part of the correspondence re the late Show has not met with Dr i Webster^ approbation. When I see in the public prints a letter like' that of " Merino]" which, under the false covering of great friendliness and interest, wilfully misconstrues the action ' of ~&ny public body, and so by mean innuendo, im-, putes to honorable men the most dishonorable actions. I am almost glad that I have sufficient manliness in me to feel due indignation, and in refuting such calumny I do not wait to clothe my ideas in elegant language, but speak forth as clearly and distinctly as 1 possibly can, and I am very much inclined to the belief — judging from certain indications which I have observed—that if the Dr had occupied the place of the Company, and come across " Merino's " letter, some kind Samaritan would require to have turned oil, merchant, and that, too, on a very extensive scale, to have assuaged the storm that would probably then have nrisen^u I. would '.respectfully notice one part of the Dr's letter. He writes : — "'As" one' of the Committee lie took a prominent part in endeavoring t'to. arrange that no person in r the district, or connected with the Compa.nies, "should bew ju'dgenof long-wools- ;""and . attributes the, failure, of the Committee in' securing siich a desideratum to the &ct r <that tm'ong -means were used to accomp^sh it. JPerhaps it may occur to Any common-sense person to put thik ' query — if the Committee wished to attain the end why unani.mously , fix - on. Messrs Anderson und Turnbull (the so-called Company's
comedown some 60 or 80 miles to officiate at -the "show. Wrong means 7 Yes ; a little so, perhaps. . Jn my bumble opinion -the Committee of the N. ,A. and P. (Association were eot elected to pay a cluvalric and delicate devotion to the interests of the JSP. Z. Land Company (as *Dr Webster's ldtitev would lead ' one to "infer). They tvefte chosen — I take it— to' manage in *b*fee most ' judicious mnmier ' the affairs generally of the Association. Oiie' 'of theii 1 duties was to irtvite to tfee l,ate Show -the- most Suitable' judges they •cenid' obtain for the Various exhibits of sbock^ >and we preSnme 1 to suppose they endeavored to -fulfil theii? duty in an ■ 'honesfc -Aiad 'itti]iartia.l riaariner. j I am, &c\, - William Young.
