Business is still without much change, although nn improved tone is beginning to manifest itself. Several considerable transactions in grain and potatoes are repoited for export, and some loading for the inteiior, but otherwise matters are much as usual. The expected rush of a population to the vVanaka Lake District is looked forward to with satisfaction, and the pro&pect of a. through route to the West Coast, as conducive to the opening up for settlement of a large tract of almost unexplored territory, which cannot fail to be productive of great benefit to this place, from its central position as a medium for import and export. The consumption of stock and produce by the large and increasing population on the West Coast, i3 inducing an improved feeling in the aeighboriug markets, and must lead to a decided rise in the rates here, the Canterbury stockowners now possessing an outlet for their surplus stock, which they could not command for many months before. Measures which intimately affect commercial interests have been, or are preuently, before the General Assombly, as for exa nple —the Amendment of the Customs' Taiiff, the Debtors' anil Creditors' Act, and the Panama Steati Service Amendment Act, which latter has already been virtually passed. With the exception of wheat and onts, which exhibit an upward tendency, wo cannot alter our last quotations.
