MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. PUBLIC MEETING.

A public meeting was held, by adjournment, in tk Court House, on Tuesday evening. Mr Locke, being called to the chair, introduced thi ■ubject and requested the Collector, Mr Sumpter, to make a statement in regard to receipts. The list ol donations showed a sum of L28 17s. 6d., besides somi raluable books. Half-yearly subscriptions had beei paid by 37 persons, and 72 were still owing. The sue of L37 7«. 6d had been realised from donations and »uV scriptions ; and the amount paid and promised in do« tions and" realised in subscriptions was L47. After a motion made by Mr James Brace that a seo tional part of a good building be erected, and another bi Mr Fullarton that a small temporary building be orecW (afterwards withdrawn), Mr Headland proposed, seconded by Mr Armson, an carried-— " That the meeting at its rising be adjourns until Thursday, 4th May, at same place and hour, ti enable plans and specifications to be presented." Mr Armson volunteered to give plans and specula tions of a permanent building and sections thereof. It was proposed by Mr O Meagher, seconded by M Clendinnen, and carried unanimously — " That Mr Am son's offer be gratefully accepted." Proposed by Mr Black, seconded by Mr Ingram, aw carried unanimously—" That the thanks of this meetiq be given to those gentlemen who came forward to assiS in the on\i«e of (lio Institute with liberal donations." Proposed by Mr Black seconded by Mr Sumpter, a» carried—" That the Committee be empowered to renty room for say three months, during which time.a decssffl will be come to as to the advisability of erecting a poi tion of the building on the site, or renting more suitaol premises." Proposed by Mr Sumpter, seconded toy Mr lngran and carried—" That the Committee be empowered t take Mr Thompson's premises in Thames-street forthw months, provided that they can be had at 14s per week. After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meetin adjourned till 4th May. A meeting of Committee was held immediately then after, Mr Locke in the chair, when it was resolved tin Messrs Black and Sumpter should take the premises h longing to Mr Thompson, if they could do so on tl terms named.
