ESTIMATES FOR 1864-5.

The Estimates for the current year, so fur as expenditure is concerned, have not yet been made known by the Provincial Treasurer. The anticipated revenue, how - ever, is estimated at £396.044 12s. 8d : and the sources from which this is to be derived are Crown Lands, from the sale of which £100,000 ib expected; Customs, £90,000 ; Gold Export Duty, £6.5.000 ; licenses ou the goldfitkh, £3,825 ; auctioneers' and publicans' licenses, £12,000 , harbor, pilotage, and jetty clu^s, £13,000; prison labor,' £10.000 ;" rents, £3,500 ; sheep assessment, £3,000 ; dog tax, £1,500; Hospital repayments, £300 ; immigration repayments on bills, £7,00.) ; school i'ee<5 and books, £l 400 : «ale of St. Kilda steamer, £6,500 ; poundkeepers' fees, £350; road tolls, £15.000; interestdue on the Port Chalmers Town Board Loan, £4.30; interest due from Town Board of Dunedin, £4,900: refunds fiom the General Government on account of lighthouses £8.000, and on account of telegraphs, £8,500. These several items added up, with the balance of general levenue on the 31st of March, 1864 (£35.301 4s. 8d ), makes a total of £431.645 17s. 4d. as the actual revenue that may be calculated upon as ordinal y revenue for 186 t-5. The proposed ordinary departmental expenses — Superintendent and Executive Council, £3,800; Pro-uncial Council, £3,950 : departments under the chaige of the Provincial Secretary, £151.704 15s, which includes goldfields, haibor. and several other minor departments ; depaitments under the control of the Provincial Treasurer, £31,223; those under the Secretary of Public Works. £32.538 : departments under the eontiol of tho Treasurer, which he entitles the General Department, comprising grants in aid of Benevolent Institution and miscellaneous votes — comprising also several large items for the pur -base of lands and land compensation in connection with the proclamation of goldficld<s, bank interest and exchange, interest on various loans, and repayment of debentures during the year, and interest on ad\ances in the meantime from the Bank of New Zealand, and possible amounts not included in the statement of liabilities to be accounted for at the next sittin» of the House, £92,165 — making a total departmental and 'general expenditure of £318.380 15^ , which, if deducted from the estimated rncnue, will, with the •surplus of £35,301 4s. 8<1. already mentioned, a balance of £113,265 2s. 4d., to be <Woted to pubUc works.
