FIVE DIPHTHERIA CASES AT MANGONUI HOSPITAL The opening of the T.B. block at the Mangonui County Memorial Hospital on Monday became necessary awing to the influx of several positive and suspected cases of diphtheria last weekend. The Department was approached and permission was given to the temporary use of the building. There are at present five positive :ases receiving treatment in- what ivas formerly the women’s general ward. To provide accommodation for possible future admissions ,of diphtheria cases, occupants of the woman’s ward have been transferred to the T.B. block. The Medical Superintendent, Dr. J. H. Webber, advised that most of the ttases reported to date are among children of school age living in the Ahipara district, and although the outbreak is the largest which has occurred in the county for some years it is under full control and there are no indications of an epidemic. Contrary to the statement published in Tuesday’s “Age,” it has been found that the present disposition of patients over a wider area has resulted in a shortage of nursing staff. Any assistance which the public coidd give the hospital authorities in this respect would be more than welcome.
