GORSE FIRE Members of the Kaitaia Voluntary Fire Brigade were not slow in answering the alarm that sounded just after 4.30 last evening. A gorse fire on the light of Okahu Road, however, already had a strong hold by the time the hoses were run out, and the flames and the smoke gave every indication of a big blaze. Okahu Road itself proved an effective fire break on one side, preventing the flames spreading to the homes opposite. Brigade members surrounded the fire, back-burning much of the gorse not yet touched by the flames, extinguishing the flames that endangered buildings or power poles and remaining on duty until the fire had burned itself out. Owners of the property on which the fire obtained such a strong hold, are Messrs. W. H. Atkins and J. T. B. Taaffe.
