Maori Concert for Ambulance Funds

Pamapuria Native- School children were at the peak of their form on Friday evening last when they presented their concert in the A. and P. Hall. As a result the funds for the Mangonui County ambulance will benefit by over £lO. The schoolchildren supplied traditional Maori entertainment which showed a very welcome revival of this art. With the natural harmony of their race the costumed children performed hakas, action songs and pois. Between several of the itemsthe audience was invited to take the floor and dance. Responsible for the training of the children and the presentation of the concert were Mr. J. H. Blackman and tribal elders. M.C. was Mr. W. Clark. Dance music was supplied by Mrs. Tom Maheno, Miss Wilson and Messrs. Dan Murray, Bob Murray and Dick King. One of the highlights was a tap dance presented by little Emily Murray of Takahue. She was recalled time and time again. The action song, “Taku Patu” which was learned only on the previous Tuesday, was extremely interesting. A mixture of a song and a chant, it combined the most unusual hand and feet actions. The programme consisted of : “Ngapuhu Taiaha Haka,” “Haere Mai, Enga Iwi,” “Kia Ora Ra,” action songs. Songs, “All Through the Night,” “Isa Lei.” Action songs, “Naumai.” Single Short Poi. Action song, “Pamai te Reo Aroha.” Songs, “Go to Sleep, My Darling,” or “Moe Mai e Hine,” a slumber song —Miss TeA. Wilson. Haka. Action song, “Kue Rongo Rongo.” Taku Patu. Double and Single Short Pois. Tap Dance—Emily Murray. Haka, “Mehe Maru Rere.” Maori Rhythmic Stick Game. Action song, “Mere Mere.” Long Single Poi.
