Sid Taaffe is supervising the work of his horse in preparation for the races to be held in Kaitaia on the 29th January. He has eyes on the race for local horses (the Lloyd Trigg Memorial). Ct The grounds committee of the Kaitaia and County Sports Club, Messrs. , H. Thompson, J. Lysaght and C. A. Gillard, are pushing ahead with the preparation of the race track. It will be in first-class order for race day. « The aged gelding, Panapu, by Dia-tomous-Te Monanui mare, is under offer to a local owner ; so far nothing has been reported of a sale taking place. This horse raced with success at the picnic meeting held in Whangarei a season or so ago. Diaphon, a full brother t 0 the speedy Dinky Di, is in work at Whangarei under the care of D. Ridings. This gelding has plenty of pace but so far has failed to show any form at the picnic meetings. He is to be given a further chance this season and will be racing at Kawakawa and it is hoped will be coming north for the Kaitaia races. Several horses throughout the Kawakawa district are in work for the meeting to be held in Kawakawa on January 25th, and it is probable some of the best of them will be here to try their luck against the Northern horses. ☆ Nandi, a good performer at last season’s picnic meetings, will, it is hoped, be nominated for the local meeting. Under the care of his owner, Fred Paul, he will receive the best of attention. Fred is also a first class rider and rode several winners of the Kawakawa Cup, in succession. Pr Some of the leading riders will be taking part at the meeting to be held on the 29th January. Charlie Cassidy, an “ace” rider at the picnic races last season, will be riding Te Opetahi and Diatona in their engagements this season. •Cr G. Herbert of Victoria Valley, has started to work his pony Pinto ; she will be a runner in the Pony Scurry at Kaitaia. tr The Auckland rider, J. Ellis, will
be riding at the local meeting. He is to have the mount on Swift Flight in the Pony Scurry, and will also be on the horses trained at Pukepoto by Johnny Hughes. ■Cr Owners are reminded that there is a shortage of iron for racing plates and should make arrangements early with their local blacksmith. The Club will endeavour to have a smith on the course on race day to do the plating of the horses. Hr Owners are reminded that programmes are now being printed and will be posted out to the various dis- | triets. Watch out for details. Nominations close on January 15th, 1947. Make sure that you have your horse entered by then. Horse owners are asked to make provision for a set of colours to race their horses with. It will certainly look much brighter with all the riders with the colours up on race day. A. MacKenzie is reported to be working a very smart thoroughbred pony by Diatomous. This pony should be able to go fast as her sire was a good sprinter in his day, winning | some of the best sprint races in the land. •a I J. Lysaght has turned his show i pony, Frisco, out for a spell. It was I intended to give him a race in the | pony scurry, but his place has been j taken in the stable by another newj comer—a very nice roan pony that can skip along over the ground. ■ -
