Annual Meeting of Red Cross

Much Work Done Still Leaves Sub Centre in Sound Position Following the opening of the Appeal for the Sick and Wounded, the Annual Meeting of the Kaitaia SubCentre of the Red Cross Society was held on Monday night, the President (Mr. R. A. Stewart) presiding. President’s Report Since the Red Cross Sub-Centre had been formed on September 19th of last year, it had grown to have a membership of 100, said the President’s report. 66 men and women had taken the first aid course and 26 were successful at the examinations. At present 26 ladies are taking instruction in home nursing. The Ladies’ Comforts Committee had done splendid work and as a result of their efforts four cases ot' comforts had been sent to Headquarters at Wellington for dispatch overseas. Their efforts had included the making of 297 bandages 182 face cloths, 90 brush bags, -17 jug covers, 32 hot water bag covers, li dozen operating socks, also a very iarge quantity of gauze swabs and old cotton and linen material, boo*-; and magazines.

On one occasion it was reported that the Returned Soldiers on guard duty at Taipa were without proper first aid equipment, and on the same day a complete first aid outfit was dispatched to them. A financial statement was read, which revealed that the Red Cross held a net profit of £46/13/11 after making all payments due. In his concluding remarks, the President thanked all donors of goods. Election of Executive The election of officers was then proceeded with, and resulted : President Mr. R. A. Stewart; VicePresidents—Mr. L. Peace and Rev. H. Whitfield; Secretary Mr. A. Bird ; Treasurer—Mr. J. O’Sullivan ; Committee Mesdames J. 8.. Reynolds, J. Rule, A. Gray, W. H. Atkins, C. G. Vaughan, D. Lewis, L. Carroll, A. Bird, Dr. Torrie, Miss C. Holder, Messrs. C. G. Vaughan, T. S. Houston, D. Archibald, A. Holder and A. MacKenzie. The past year’s secretary, Mr. W. R. Langley, was thanked for his services.
