The March of Events
The Finns are still strongly resisting the Russian invasion. The Soviet is reported to have suffered severe losses of material and men. The Finns have announced their decision to the League of Nations to fortify an island in the Baltic ; last year the Soviet protested against the intention of the Finns to make the fortification as they considered it menaced Russian territory. * * * There have been further demonstrations against the Soviet in Rome where the Embassy has had to have protection against students decrying j the invasion of Finland. * It it -tt The British restriction on German exports came into operation yesterday. it it it The R.A.F. launched a successful attack on Heliogoland, sinking a seaplane and scoring a direct hit on a destroyer. it it & A U-boat was sunk yesterday by an R.A.F. plane which made a direct hit with a bomb on the submarine. Says the U.S. “Washington Post”: “Hitler’s great blunder was miscalculation of Britain’s will to fight. The bulldog spirit still rules among a people who know how to die but not how to surrender.”
FOOD PROBLEMS IN GERMANY The shortage of food in Germany is more in evidence every day. Erstaz (substitute) tea and coffee may by this time have become a habit, but sugar is almost unprocurable in Germany and the Protectorate. Milk can only be got by children and young mothers. Fish is very scarce, since the German fishing fleet is lying idle in the harbours, afraid of the British Navy. The Nazis are obliged to broadcast the virtues of their synthetic fat, which they admit is made of coal, though they assert it is tasteless and odourless. The shortage of fats affects the soap industry. To buy a good soap that will really clean it is necessary to get a medical certificate to say that the skin requires it. Tobacco could be got from the Balkans if Germany could pay for it but since she cannot very little is available, and what there is is reserved for men. No woman is now allowed to smoke in Germany or the Protectorate. —“Time and Tide.”
