Additions to Kaitaia Hotel.
Petition Being Circularised Calling '» Town Board to Rescind Permit The following is the text of a petition that is being circularised in Kaitaia in connection with the action the Town Board in granting a permit for additions to be built to the Redan Hotel, in wood. We, the undersigned Ratepayers and Householders of Kaitaia Town Board area request your immediate consideration of the following : That in view of the fact that at a special meeting, and not at a regular meeting, the Town Board in granting permission to the proprietors of Redan Hotel, situate in the Brick Area of Kaitaia Town, to alter and/ or add in wood, did establish a bad precedent and show lack of foresight, justice and courage by breaking or over-riding a Specific Bye-Law. That also, hitherto, in refusing resident Ratepayers and Business peole permission to alter and/or add in wood, polite, iron, etc., other than Brick or Concrete, improvements and progress have been unprofitable’ hindered. That the Town Board must recognise the proprietors of Redan Hotel
are more fortunately favoured with land space and finance than local individuals, who, in striving as Useful Citizens are the actual contenders for Kaitaia’s progress and welfare ; and whereas more than 95 percent of the Hotel Business is in Unproductive Bar Trade which does not build up or sustain the progress and prestige particularly of the Local European Business Community, we are of the opinion that in Flouting An Established And Previously Enforced ByeLaw, the Town Board has unjustly favoured one outside individual Company to the detriment and disadvantage of several or many Local Residents. We now ask jour definite decision to the following : I—That the proprietors of Redan Hotel be not favoured or granted permission to do that which other Ratepayers and Kaitaia Business People have been refused to do. That permission be immediaely withdrawn irrespective of the Town Board’s hasty decision and action. or
2 That the Bye-Law respecting Brick Area Buildings or Alterations be rescinded until after the next Town Board Election, or until such time as the newly elected Town Board determines. or 3 That failing to comply with the abovementioned requests (1 and 2) those members of the Town Board who Voted In Favour of deriding the Bye-Law thus betraying the confidence of Ratepayers and Householders, shall forthwith Resign from the Board. MANCHESTER UNITY NOTES Sixty members attended the usual meeting of the Loyal Kaitaia Lodge when three new benefit and two honorary members were enrolled. The date of the next meeting—quarter night—will be August 31 when the lecture master will confer degrees. At the conclusion of the lodge meeting, members welcomed friends who had been invited to join in the social programme, and although seating accommodation was well below requirements, everybody enjoyed a good time. The progressive 500 was won by Sister Watts and Bro. Cosson—the consolations went to Sister Ballantine and Bro. J. W. Parker. The remainder of the evening, after an excellent supper provided by the members, and served by Sisters Dean and Cowie —was dancing and items for which latter the lodge is indebted to Sister Bagley, Mr. Kirby and Bros. Begley, Cosson and Hansen. The competition was won by Bro. Alton. “Some ratepayers are under the impression that favouritism is being shown in regard to suing for rate arrears. This is absolutely incorrect.” —Cr. Holder at Council meeting.
