MANGONUI COUNTY ROADS AND ROADWORK
The following report of the works in the County was presented to the last meeting of the County Council by the County Engineer, Mr. R. R. Torrie : Since last meeting of the Council the various works let have been pushed ahead, and good progress was made until the wet weather held up metalling jobs. Maintenance of main highways has been kept up with graders, and the surfacing will not be . started until after New Year. Authorities have now been received for Fisher’s road and Unahi road, and tenders will be called, closing early in the new year. The contractors for Awanui bridge hope to make a start straight after New Year. Plans of main highways where flooding occurs hav9 been prepared. Kawakawa corner is most necessary to be dealt with hut cost is high, approximately £I2OO. Other points requiring toberaised if an all weather route is required south, is from C. Matthews’ to Fryer’s road, and at Double Crossing bridge. Alternative plans have been prepared for the Mangonui wharf. One scheme is to have sufficient room round the cargo shed for trucks to go right round, and load either direct from boat or from the
front of the wliarfshed. The other scheme is to have the shed on one side of the wharf so that trucks can load in front of the wharf or direct from ship, room being allowed for turning. The latter is the cheaper proposal and gives more shed area, but the first schema would be much more convenient for trucks handling cargo. * * * • In the discussion at the Council meeting it was decided that the first scheme as recommended by the Engineer would be the best, although costing about £4OO more than the alternative.
