Children’s Fancy Dress Ball

Kaitaia District High School’s Annual Event a Great Success The Kaitaia district high school’s annual children’s fancy dress ball was held in the A. and P. hall last Thursday evening, when a large number of scholars and their parents and others were present. The hall had been decorated by Miss L Lawes, of the secondary division staff, assisted by scholars. All arrangements were well organised by the school staff* under the head, Mr. A. H. Woods, members of the school committee assisting. During the evening a number of the

younger children, who had been trained by Miss Smith, infant mistress, gave the Fairies’ Dance and the March of the Toy Soldiers, these being excellently carried out. At the conclusion of the children’s dances, Santa Claus drove into the hall in a sleigh drawn by boys, and distributed gifts from the Christmas tree to the younger children. The judges, Mrs. J. B. Johnston, wife of the head teacher of the Awanui School, Miss A. Henehan, of the Awanui school staff, and Miss M. Urlich, of the Ahipara school, made the following awards for fancy dresses : Most Effective Costume : Girls Mary Parker (Shepherdess) 1, Leone Subritzky (Old English Lady) 2, Gwen Bastard (Britannia), Winnie Berghan (Jean Batten), and Zelda Johnston (Court Gentleman) 3. Boys Ken Timbers' (Chinese Mandarin) 1, Jim Thornton (Hawaiian) 2, Max Werner (Dutch Hans) 3. Character Costume : Girls—Olwyn Atkin (Alice in Wonderland) 1, Mary Lunjevich (Elizabethan Boy) 2. Boys —Michael Atkins (Punch) 1, Charlie Woods (Mephistopheles) 2. Advertisement Costume : Girls Hilda Stenseness (Eat More Fruit) 1, Reina Bastard (Buy British Goods) 2. Football Results) 1. When presenting the prizes to the various winners, Mr. F. B. Rowe, chairman of the school committee, complimented the parents on the manner in which the children had been dressed in fancy costumes ; he also congratulated the children on the excellent display in the various dances, and the school staff on the efficient organisation. Arrayed in their multi-coloured costumes, the youthful dancers presented a galaxy of colour as they glided round the floor. The arrangements for the Christmas tree were carried out by Mrs. A. H. Woods, and to the members of the school committee, the parents of the children, and a number of Kaitaia business firms is due the credit for the very sumptuous supper served to both the children and the adults. The school equipment fund will benefit to the extent of over £lB as a result of the evening.
