Preparing for Waitangi Treaty Celebrations
Work on the roads in the Waitangi National Reserve and the bridge across the river giving access to the estate are being pushed forward rapidly, and by the end of this month it is hoped to have the bridge so far completed as to allow traffic to cross. Difficulty v/as experienced in getting suitable gear together at short notice for the building of the bridge, and a certain amount of trouble was occasioned by the tides, but these hindrances were overcome by the experience and ingenuity of those in charge. All the piles are driven and the concrete work is now above high water mark. The piers are nearly completed and the steel joists and the decking laid for over half way. On the estate a large cook-house and dining hall for the accommodation of the visiting Natives are in course of erection, and a grandstand to seat about 500 persons is also being built. The restoration work on the Treaty house is about finished. Permission to establish a permanent motor camp in the Reserve has been granted, and special motor parking areas for day visitors during the celebrations are to be arranged on the Paihia side of the river.
