Death of Mr James Brownlie

We regret to record the death on Monday afternoon, January Ist., at the Mangonui Hospital of Mr. James A. Brownlie. Tho late Mr. Brownlie was horn in 1859 at Pollockshaws, Scotland, and was educated in Glasgow. As a young man he travelled considerably, being in Ceylon in 1894, and some years afterwards he came to New Zealand. In 1893 he was employed in the Dunedin brand] of Dalgety and Co. but desiring an open air position bo entered the Health Department as an inspector and served in many parts of the Welling I ,on and Taranaki provinces including Horowhenua County Fielding, Stratford, Eltlmm and Waitara and also at Nuie Island. In 1906 he resigned from the Health Department to enter the teaching profession under the Auckland Education Board and was in charge of various backblock schools among which were Tokerimu (King Country) Piaka, Oruaiti, Awanga and Puketurua finally retiring in 1922. Until three years ago he resided with friends at Avondale, Auckland, when he came North to Rangipula to live with his old friend, Mr. F. E. Leith, teacher at the Waingakau School, ,Two mcnibs ago * oecame seriously ill and was taken to th ; Mangonui Hospital and despite all the care and attention he gradually sank and passed away. He was a man of humble but stilling character and had many friends throughout New Zealand. Mr. Brownlie was not married and his only relative is a sister in Scotland. The funeral took place at Mangonui on Wednesday, the Rev. Mr. Nicholas conducting the sermon at the graveside,
