March 27 Mr. Watson, a mako shark, 1701 b; Mr. Ellis brought in four striped marlin, 270, 234, 260, and 3401 b. Mr. Ellis also hooked a black marlin weighing about 4001 b which, after leaping out of the water several times near the launch, got clear of the hook and escaped. The majority of the above fish were caught at the Cavalli Islands, several miles inside the Whangaroa boundaries. It has been noticed with appreciation that several Russell launches are also enjoying good sport around the Cavalli Islands. N.Z.F.U. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kaeo branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the library rooms last Saturday evening. It was reluctantly decided that the question of a daily mail service between Kaeo and Auckland would have to be shelved for a few months. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr. H. M. Rushworth thanking him for all he had done to assist the efforts of the Branch in this matter. The Omahutu Block has been inspected by three members of the Branch and pronounced eminently suitable for farming. The question of the opening of this Block for settlement is therefore to be revived at an early date. Members of the committee reported what progress had been made in furthering Mr. J. W. Jones’ election as Tenants’ representative on the Crown Lands Board. At the close of the meeting proper Mr. J. W. Jones, President of the Bay of Islands Sub-Provincial Council, addressed those present, giving an interesting talk on general topics. The annual meeting of the Branch is to be held on April 29th. Obituary The death occurred on Tuesday, March 21st, of Mr. A. G. Atwell, of Matangirau, a well-known farmer in this district. Amos John Atwell was born in Tasmania in 1884, and came to New Zealand in 1908. He lived in Dannevirke for a time, and then came North, where in 1910 he married Alice Maud Shepherd, daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Shepherd of Matangirau. After his marriage he carried on farming in Matangirau. A large number of people were present at the funeral service conducted by the Rev. Isherwood in the Kaeo Public Cemetery on Wednesday last. A widow, three sons, and a daughter are left to mourn their loss.
