CHILLED BEEF SHIPMENT.
The Port Fairy’s cargo of New Zealand chilled beef arrived in London last week in moderate condition. Some quarters were good, but many were affected by black mould, necessitating considerable trimming before they will be saleable. Australian and Argentine experts were greatly interested in the consignment, and expressed the opinion that the quality was admirable, but lack of experience was apparently responsible for the faulty condition, as, in spite of the fact that the shipment took less time in transit than the Port Fairy’s Sydney shipment, the latter was satisfactory. From this it is deduced that handling at the source and not the length of the voyage is the vital factor. The South African shipment of chilled beef arrived simultaneously. The quality of the meat was moderate, but it carried well.
Later reports state that laboratory tests of the New Zealand chilled beef have given excellent results, and retailers have purchased it readily.
