In and About Kaitaia

“Alloy”, Mr. W. H. Maria’s horse, continued its successes at Southern Race meetings by being placed in two races at Paeroa last weekend. * * * * Mr. Allen, Technical Adviser to the Health Department was in the district last week, obtaining information regarding the cost of the removal of the County Hospital from Mangouui to Eaitaia. * * * * Mr. D. Rutledge, of Kaitaia, has received word from the Returned Soldiers' Asson. that nine crosses have been forwarded for erection on the graves of returned soldiers buried in the Ahipara, Pukepoto and Kaitaia cemeteries. * * * * While the Council Roller was being taken through to Herekino it went off the road at the Kaitaia end of the Gorge and capsized. The super-Btructure and the flywheel were broken but otherwise the engine does not appear to be damaged. 0 * * * * The approaches to the bridge in the town area on the Pukepoto Road have been widened considerably by the Town Board staff during the past week. This, together with the work carried out at Grigg's Corner are decided improvements in the area. * * ♦ ♦ Owing to the Government Land Purchase Officer being in Hokianga, Mr. A C. Yarborough was unable to come to Kaitaia last Wednesday evening and so the meeting that was to have been held to discuss the Small Farm scheme bad to be postponed. * * * * All prizes of over £1 gained at the last Kaitaia Show have been forwarded to the lucky exhibitors but prize money under that amount will be left with Mr. K. A. Knight, Jeweller, Kaitaia from whom the various winners may obtain their prizes. Mrs. J. Brewer, of Kaitaia, is at present in the Mangonui Hospital undergoing treatment. * * * * The warm rains of the past fortnight in the North have stimulated the autumn growth of grass to an unusual extent, with the effect that the suppliers of cream to the factories have recovered so far that they now form a record for this time of the year.
