The late Arnold Bennett, the famous novelist, like most of his fellowcraftsmen, constantly sought and found inspiration in tobacco. He would sit in his study in his pretty Essex home, pipe in mouth, weaving the fancies which were to delight the world. That is one of the many virtues of the weed. It appeals to all, and is as indispensable to the navvy or the coster as it is to the man of culture. Smoking has been condemned by anti-tobaceoites because it so often contains an excess of nicotine. And nicotine is certainly a bad thing. But there’s hardly any in New Zealand toasted tobacco. The toasting expels the nicotine and leaves the baccy as sweet as a nut and full of fragrance. How different from the imported brands! You can’t smoke the imported for long- without feeling you’ve had enough for a while, but you can smoke toasted all day long if you like! There’s no “bite” in it! There are four brands only : Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. 222
