DURABILITY OF ENGLISH IRON

In his report to the Hokianga Coun- t ty Council at last Thursday’s meeting, s the Engineer, Mr. J. Kelly, made re- 1 ference to an English-made corru- I gated iron culvert, and to illustrate the durability of English iron stated j that in 1852 severe disturbances and ] riots occurred in Victoria. Troops and i police were sent to keep the peace, and j barracks were erected of heavy gal- ( vanised iron. When war broke out in j New Zealand these barracks were dismantled, removed and re-erected by the military authorities at New Ply- j ; mouth somewhere about 1862. Many : years later the old barracks were pul- | led down and some of the iron used to build a shelter at Mt. Egmont. He wrote to the Secretary of the Egmont National Park recently, who informed i him that the iron was still perfectly | good, and as far as he could tell would last for many years yet. This brought | the service up to 79 years with more j life to go. This iron was for years | exposed to a salt-laden atmosphere in time of storm, and was not well cared for. Modern iron hould be even more durable as the process of manufacture had improved in regard to its lasting qualities.
