Methodist Bazaar and Concert at Fairburn

The ladies of the Methodist Guild held a most successful bazaar in the Kaiaka hall on Thursday, 26th. The bazaar was largely patronised during the day, the visitors incuding many from Kaitaia and Oruru. The stalls contained a variety of goods, including plain and fancy work by the local guild members, produce, cakes, etc., and afternoon tea was also provided. The thanks of the Guild are due to those from the outlying districts who sent goods, and assisted by their patronage. The stall-holders included the following ladies : Work Stall —Mesdames May and Metcalfe ; Cake Stall—Mesdames G. Chapman and A. Tracey ; Sweets Stall—Mrs. T. Taylor and Misses D. Thomas and D. May ; Fancywork Stall —Misses 0. Coulter, M. Coulter and C. Rogers ; Produce Stall Mesdames Hoskin, Fisher and Parker. The Tea Stall was in charge of Mesdames J. Williams, Foster, and Dawson and Misses Foster and Wallace, and was well patronised. In the lunch hour the school children came along and had their lunch at the tea stall. Mrs. Metcalfe was seci'etary to the bazaar committee. In the evening the concert wafe well attended and proved very enjoyable, every item being encored. The programme comprised vocal solos by Mesdames Phillips, Wood, and Chapman and Messrs. Kennedy and Cowie ; duets by Ruby and Theda Christensen and Mrs. Chapman and Miss E. Foster ; a violin solo by Mr. Chapman, recitations by Mrs. J. Garton and Mr. E. J. Clarke, and an instrumental item by Maori friends. The accompanists were Mrs. Phillips, Messrs. D. Archibald and B. Forster. When all the returns are in it is expected that the net proceeds will amount to about £39. After the concert the goods left over from the bazaar were sold at auction, Mr. A. McKenzie wielding the hammer in a most efficient manner. Rev. E. J. Clarke of Kaeo officiated as chairman in the absence of the Rev. Mr. Raynor in Auckland. Mr. Hoskin at the conclusion announced that the days proceeds amounted to £36. He thanked the ladies for having arranged the bazaar, the public for their generous patronage, the Rev. E. J. Clarke for coming to officiate in Mr. Raynor’s absence, and Mr. Bruce Foster for having organised the concert, which the sepaker said was the best ever presented locally.
