FARMIRS’ EXCURSION TOUR.

RAILWAY OFFICIAL'S VIBIT SPEEDING-UP OF EXPRESS SUGGESTED

A representative meeting of different local bodies gathered at the Council Chambers last Wednesday evening to hear Mr. Lovell, of the Railways Department, explain the itinerary of the forthcoming tour of the North Island by North Auckland farmers. Mr. W. Vickers presided, and also present were Mr. Allen Bell, president, and Mr. G. Rickard, vice-president, of the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce ; Mr. H. White, representing the Victoria Valley Farmers ; Messrs. Mitchell and Bedggood, Kaitaia Town Board ; Mr. L. A. Mclntosh, Kaitaia Dairy Co.; and Mr. Hodgson, Farmers’ Union.

The tour, Mr. Lovell explained, would start and finish at Otiria, and would include all the main centres on the main trunk to Wellington, at which city several days would be spent, other places of interest being visited on the return journey. The farms of the principal stud breeders in each district and the Government experimental farms and Massey College would be inspected. From Hamilton a trip would be run to Cambridge and Te Awamutu, with a visit to the Glaxo and butter and box factories of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co. Including all accommodation the cost would be about £2O. Women would be eligible to make the tour and where possible would be given the oest accommodation. After discussion it was agreed to include in the tour visits to Arapuni and Rotorua, the whole trip occupying two weeks. A suggestion to speed up the Northern express was submitted to Mr. Lovell. Other recommendations made to him were the provision of tootwarmers on northern trains and the possibility of inaugurating a daily parcels and goods delivery from Otiria to the Northern districts, including Kaitaia. Mr, Lovell promised to lay these matters before his department on his return to Auckland.
