The Coming County Elections
Natives Vote Names On The Roll Entitled To Vote Cr. Berghan brought forward the question of the native vote at the coming County Election. There was a difference of opinion on the matter and he would like to know the legal opinion. Mr McKinnon said that the natives are entitled to vote and their names would appear on the rate roll. Cr Kitchen: What about the amount ot native fates outstanding ; only a portion was paid. Cr Long : It is one ot those things over which we have no control The valuation department have had them put on the roll. Cr Wnthall: When in Wellington on behalf of the County Council I accepted £3,s°° including settlement of their account. An act of Parliament was passed which wiped off all arrears. The natives can vote and it cannot be denied them, although it may appear anomalous. They will be called upon to pay the full amount of rates after 1933. Mr McKinnon stated that there were 1400 names on the County rolls for the coming election.
