A Matter of Horse Hire War Pension Case “Jack" Taitahi Fined Fiver A native named “John” Taitahi was fined a fiver at Houhora.on Monday for a breach of Section D. War Pensions’ Act 1915The facts were that the genial John submitted to an officer doing duty or. behalf of the War War Pensions’ Board a document which was false in an important particular. It appears that John attended a sitting of the War Pension s’ Board at Mangonni recently and was informed that he would be entitled to a refund of any expeuses incurred in travelling to attend the sitting of the Board provided he produced a proper receipi establishing his right to a refund. This was too good an opportunity to Bliss so he forged a receipt for £2/10/- for horsehire, such receipt purporting to have been signed by a Mr. A V Stevens a resident of Houhora. Mr. Stevens knew nothing of the transaction, consequently John found his way before Mr. Levien S.M. at the Houhora Police Court as stated and “a fiver" was the contribution he was ordered to make to the revenue of the country. In default of payment John will be asked to spend a month of his precious time cutting wood and carrying water for Constable Thornell or Constable Bisset or some other limb of the law.
