THE TELEPHONE EXCHAGE
CONTINUOS SERVICE FOR KAITAIA The Kaitaia Telephone Exchange having got more than the required number of subscribers to the Exchange is now eligible for a continuous service. By a continuous service is meant that the Exchange is never closed, being open continuously night and day; Sundays and holidays included. At present Whangarei is the only town North of Auckland having this concession.
Mr. Vernon Reed, M.P., who has been interesting himself in this matter, has been informed that the Department agrees to a continuous service being established on the usual terms, that is that two-thirds of the business subscribers and two-thirds ot the private residence subscribers make a request for such service and agree to pay an additional £1 each per annum. For the purpose of voting, a party line carrys one vote. But in regard to the extra subscription, party line subscribers would be required to pay five shillings each, with a minimum of £1 per line. A requisition for signature lies at the AGE Office. The obtaining of a continuous telephone service would be a fine advertisement for the district and we hope that sufficient signatures will be obtained. The matter was brought up by Mr. L. H. Bell at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening, and generally approved. The President of the Chamber endorsed the movement and signed the requisition, and was followed by several others.
