Mangonui Methodist Church Bazaar.
This sale of work, etc., eventuated in McKay’s Hall, Mangonui, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last, the County Chairman, Mr. George Wilkinson, opening the bazaar in due form on Thursday afternoon. Those ladies who undertook the duties of stall keepers, and with their own failhands and some assistance from their men folk executed the picture, have • every reason to be proud of the manner and form of the decorations and of the fair tout ensemble which they created in the Bazaar. The platform was arched in greenery and its space was used as a tea room which was patronised to the fullest extent. The hall itself was hung with flags and with the tasteful decorative designs of the various stalls there was everything that could please the eye and nothing that could add to artful picturesqueness appeared to be omitted. Of the attractions for the extraction of coin of the realm there were so many of fun provoking character that.it 0 is impossible to fully detail them;. ladies’ nail-driving competitions, gentlemen’s hat-trimming contests, guessing at the weights of cakes, at the number of sweets in a jar, and last but by no means least an excruciatingly funny and clever art gallery, wherein were depicted in common form paintings that may not have done credit to the brushes of artists but which pictured with fanciful accuracy to the mind the subjects treated. As to public patronage the management have every reason to be thankful for rarely have we seen such general attendance at any function. Qn every afternoon and evening that the bazaar ivas opened it was thronged Avith people both from the township and out districts. The takings at the door vouch for the fact that there were very few indeed who omitted to pay at least a passing visit to the sale room and avc venture the belief that once inside the doors there Av*re none Avho did not stay to partake of some of the fun and frivolity that was going or Avho left Avithout feeling that they had been fully repaid for their visit. Of those who helped it would be impossible to give a full list but Mr. and Mrs. McKay were in the forefront of the workers and did right good service for the cause. The ladies Avho held stalls, and the colour schemes of their individual dressing Avere: — Mrs. Campbell and Miss Nellie Campbell ; white and pale blue. Mrs. McCready and Miss Gertie Bramley; white and pink. Mrs. Williams; white and tangarine. Mrs. Hunt and Miss Beryl Wilkinson; Avhite and cerise. Mrs. Syd. Wrathall and Miss Hilda Wrathall; white and pale green. (In our judgment this stall held pride of place for artistic beauty). Mrs. A. McKay, Misses McKay and Penney; white and royal blue. The confectionery stall. And Mrs. Kosieur, Mrs. Steve Wrathall and Miss Ada Campbell Avere in charge of the tea room. For the children a bran pie was supplied and the little ones delighted in the elements of chance which jvere thus brought into their small invest merits for charity. Of the funny and sportive competitions the gentlemen’s hat-trimming calls for mention and therein Messrs. Gordon Wallace and George Green scored successes. And in the nail-driving contests Mesdames McCready and Green were preeminent. But it is impossible to detail all the amusements prorided or the successes-or failures of those who joined in them and we must leave to the imagination of our readers much that was interesting and delightful in a Bazaar Avhich was throughout ably managed and well planned. The building fund of the proposed Methodist Church in Mangonui will benefit to the extent of £73 4/8 as a result of the function under review, that
being the gross amount from which must be deducted payment of all the out of pocket expenses. Altogether a most charming and successful charitable function, at the conclusion of whieh Mr. John Garfcon kindly auctioned all the not many unsold articles.
