Mb. FuznERBERT. — The Advertiser says :— " We learn that Mr. Fitzherbert, the Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand, is to leave London for Wellington not later than the 2nd of February. This will enable the honourable gentleman, whose exertions must be and are fully appreciated by colonists generally, to take his seat in the next session of the Assembly, and lond his valuable assistance to the Government." Desertions from the Front. — According to a telegram from Wellington, which appears in the Sun, desertions from the forces at the front are stated to number 150. Imperial Troops. — We, Wellington Independent, learn on authority that his Excellency the Governor }ms received a despatch from the Secretary of State with respect to the resolutions of the House of Representatives, praying for the detention of the 18th Regiment in Now Zealand. The Imperial Government decline to accede to tho request, and intimate that tho troops will bo required to leave by tho Himalaya, shortly to arrive. What will those who, whilo bawling out for Imperial troops, have been belauding the natives and libelling the colonial forces, say regarding this information ? Grand Steeplechase in Curistchurch. — A grand steeplechase, under the auspices of the Christchurch Jockey Club, is announced to take place in April, in honour of the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Wellington Jockey Club. — The Independent Bays :— " A meeting of the Wellington Jockey Club was held at tho Now Zealand Hotel, on Thursday night (28th ultimo), but only a few members were present. Wo would suggest to tho Club tho propriety of fixing the races at a time, say the first week in April, when his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh will be present. Though ho does not visit Australia officially, he will come to this colony, not only as captain of the Gulatea, but as the son of our beloved Queen, and wo doubt not he will receive as hearty a welcome by tho people of Wellington as ho would havo done had he arrived here last year." Trade in Uokitika. — A correspondent of the Qrey River Argas writes :—": — " There is still a large population in the district, but the miners are scattered about in tho creoks and gullies around. The Greenstone is all the talk now, and great numbers of men arc going up daily. On Monday (tho Bth) I counted fully seventy swag-beladcn diggers, wending their way to tho Teremakau, en route for the Greenstone. Tho idea has been mooted for making tho Teremakau a port. It is very certain that, for some time, almost any ordinary coasting craft could enter the river and dischargo cargo. On Monday, there was fourteen feet of water on tho Teremakau bar, with a clean run out and good shelter inside. I hear it is probable that tho Yarra will be despatched to examine tho entrance. Amongst other topics, I may mention that thoro is a very strong feeling just now in favour of tho Southern diggings. I hear thut at Okarito, and down as far as Jacksou's Bay, tho diggers are doing extremely well, and that now ground has been discovered. I saw a beautiful speciinon of coarse nuggcty gold tho other day, brought from tho neighbourhood of Jackson's Bay. Matters seem so far improving in that district that a gentleman in Uokitika is about to erect a largo store and dep6t at Jackson's Bay, and ho assures me ho has tho prospect of doing very well."
