Colonial Defence Office, Wellington, January 11, 1869. HHHE following EEGULATIONS are pubj JL lished for general information. T. M. HAULTAIN. 1 Regulations toe Peize Fieing in the Southeen Island. 1. One-half the amount voted by the Assembly for Prizes (viz., £500) will be appropriated to the South Island. 2. The sum of J6200 will be given for the Colonial Prizes, and tho remaining £300 will be distributed amongst tho different Provinces in proportion to the number of Volunteers and Cadets borne on the strength on the Ist January, 1869, viz. : — £ For Nelson 42 „ Marlborough . . . .27 „ Westland, including Westport and Charleston . . . .46 „ Canterbury 80 „ Otago 90 „ Southland 15 3. The firing for Colonial Prizes will take place at Dunedin, in the month of April, on a day which will hereafter be named by the Government. 4. The District Prize Firing shall take place in the month of March, on such dates and at such places as shall be fixed by the Officers Commanding, who will also make all other necessary arrangements, and will divide the amount at their disposal into such prizes as they think most desirable ; but no one prize is to exceed £10, and no prize will be given for a less score than 25 marks. 5. All officers and members of Volunteer or Cadet Corps are eligible to compete for the District Prizes. 6. Competitors for the District Prizes will fire at ranges of 300, 400, and 500 yards ; five shots at each range, without artificial rest, any position ; one sighting shot at each range. Highest possible score, 60 marks. 7. Each Province may send one representative to the Colonial Prize Firing for every 100, or fraction of 100 not beiug less than 50, enrolled Volunteers ; the highest scorers at the District Prize Firing shall be the representatives, and, in addition to the above, one representative for every thirty men who score 35 marks at the District Prize Firing may also be sent ; but no Province shall be allowed to send more than twenty representatives. 8. No representative shall be admissible who docs not himself score 40 marks. 9. Competitors for the Colonial Prizes will fire for the Ist Set Peizes. At ranges of 400, 500, and 600 yards. Five shots at each range. No artificial rest. Any position. One sighting shot at each range. Ist Prize £50 2nd Prize £25 3rd Prize £15 4th Prize £10 No prize will be given for a less score than 30 marks. Highest possible score, 60 marks. 2nd Set Peizes. At ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards. Five shots at each range. No sighting shot. Hythe position at 200 yards ; any position at 500 and. 600 yards. Ist Prize £20 2nd Prize £15 3rd Prize £10 4th Prize £5 No prize will be given for a less score than 30 marks. Highest possible score, 60 marks. 3ed Set ov Peizes. At ranges of 700 and 800 yards. Ten shots at each range. Any position. One sighting shot at each range. Ist Prize £15 2nd Prize £10 3rd Prize £5 No prize will given for a less score than 30 marks. Highest possible score, 80 marks. 4th Set— Cadet Peizes. Five shots at a range of 150 yards, with breech or muzzle-loading carbines. Standing or kneeling only, without artificial rest. Highest possible score, 20 marks. No prize will be given for a less score than 12 marks. To bo competed for by members of Cadet Corps not exceeding seventeen years of age. Each Corps to send one representative, who is to be selected by preliminary competitive firing (to be arranged by the Officer Commanding the District), at ranges of 100 and 150 yards. Five shots at each range. The highest scorer to be the representative. Ist Prize £10 2nd Prize £7 3rd Prize £3 10. Winners of Ist and 2nd Prizes in the Ist Set are debarred from compoting in the 2nd Set. Size of Taegets. 11. For the District and Ist Colonial Prizes, 6 feet by 6 feet ; bull's eye, 2 feet square ; centre, 4 feet square. For the 2nd Set Colonial Prizes, at 200 yards, 6 feet by 4 feet ; bull's eye, 8 inches square ,• centre, 2 feet square. At 500 and 600 yards, same size as Ist Set. For the 3rd Set, Hythe Targets. For the 4th Set, same as 2nd Set, at 200 yards. ]2. The cost of a saloon cabin passage to and from Dunedin (calculated at the rates charged for returntickets), will be allowed to the competitors, together with a sum of 10s. a day to each non-resident during his unavoidable detention at Dunedin. Genehal Rules to be obseeved in Fieing toe the Geneeal Government Peizes. 13. The long or medium Enfield rifle, the Lancaster rifle, and the breech or muzzle-loading carbine, as issued by the General or Provincial Governments, must alone bo used. Competitors using the carbine at the 400, 500, and 600-yard ranges, will be allowed one mark at the first range, two marks at the second, and three marks at the third range. 14. The minimum pull of trigger to be six pounds. 15. Ammunition will be provided by the Government. 16. The senior officer on the ground may direct the examination of the arms used by competitors, at at any time before, during, or after the firing ; and should any arm be found to have been tampered with, or the pull of trigger to be below the minimum, the competitor using such arm will be disqualified, and his score disallowed. 17. In the scoring, the value of shots will be — Bull's eye, 4 ; centre 3 ; outer 2. 18. The firing for Government Prizes should be superintended, if possible, by a Field-Officer ; and in the absence of any Field-Officer, there must be (exclusive of any Medical Officer) at least two Commissioned Officers on tho ground. 19. A list, giving each competitor a number only, will be given to the officer and marker ; another list will be made out with each competitor's name and corresponding number on it, to be kept by the Senior Oflicer stal ioned at the spot where the competitors lire from. 20. The Senior Oflicer present will appoint one person to call the names of competitors at tho place of firing, and another to remain with the marker near the target. 21. The Senior Oflicer present will appoint a marker, who will be under the immediate supervision of the officer appointed to remain near the target. Markers will receive pay at the rate of ss. per diem, if not in the employ of the Government.
