SUNKEN ROCK, NEAR NAPIER. NOTICE TO MARINEES.
[From the General Government Gazette, August 27.3 Report made by Captain Gibson, Steamship Auckland, of a Rook, said to exist near Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, not laid down in the Admiralty Charts. 11th August, 1863.— 7.45, weighed. 8, set on full speed, and rounded Ahuriri Bluff. 8.20, a.m., ship heading S.E. by £ grazed a rock without stopping her headway. Immediately stopped the engines, closed the valves in the water-tight bulkheads, and sounded each compartment. Depth of water along* side, 9 fathoms ; tide, three-quarters ebb ; ship* draught forward, 11 feet ; aft, 12 feet 6 inches. - Compose bearing taken immediately after striking, North* Eastern extreme of Ahuriri Bluff, West ; Cape Kidnappers, S.E., having no deviation with the ship heading S.E. by E. 1 can confidently state the bear* ings to be correct. . ■ 8.30, a.m., finding the ship making no water, proceeded at half-speed, hand-lead kept constantly going, and pump-wells sounded half-hourly.
