MARLBOROUGH.
The Marlborough Press of the 2nd instant says — " A small sample of gold has been brought to us by Mr. Hutcheson, which he informs us was found at Massacre-hill, by a man named Charles Ross, who picked it out from amongst some quartz which he dug up whilst working on the road. lie is about to try what he can procure by washing, and we shall acquaint our readers with the result as soon as we are in possession of it. Gold has been found in other parts of the province, but whether it exists in such quantities as will pay for the working, remaius to be determined by actual experiment." The same journal, speaking of the public works in progress in the province, says : — " The punt for the Wairau ferry was launched 'on Thursday. It is forty feet long and twenty i feet wide. The Tua Marina bridge is opened. The Waitohi road is progressing rapidly towards completion, and is dow iv a very good state. The Spring Creek bridge is commenced, and will be completed with as little delay as possible." A meeting of the electors had taken place at Picton to hear from Dr. Mouro, who is a can*
didate for their suffrages, a statement of his opinion on public affairs. Dr. Monro addressed the meeting at considerable length, and a resolution was unanimously carried, declaring him a fit person to represent the district.
The Provincial Treasurer's half yearly statement of receipts and expenditure to December .'sl, shows the revenue of the province to have been for the preceding six months £ 13,8/0 12s. Gd., and the expenditure £G,062 10s. lid.; of the latter sum, 568()3 18s. 3d. were for departmental expenses.
