OTAGO.

The papers lately received from this province contain little news beyond the proceedings of the Provincial Council.

The opening address of the Superintendent has already appeared in this journal. The business of the session has been steadily proceeding, and amongst the bills introduced ivas one to provide for the alienation of a town reserve for the purpose of erecting thereon a house for the u^e of the Maories frequenting the town of Dunedin. The site had been chosen by some officers of the General Government, and a handsome stone huild'ug had been erected ; but some of the members of the Council objected that this ((me of the very best and most valuable sites in the town) should be alienated for such a purpose, and on the motion for the third reading, the bill was thrown out by a majority of one vote. This the Executive regarded as a vote of censure, and they tendered their resignations, which were accepted by the Superintendent. Alter an effect ial attempt to form another " ministry," his Honour sent down a message to the Council, and requested them to appoint an Executive. This request was declined ; and eventually Mr. Reynolds, the leader of the opposition, undertook the task. The new Executive consists of Messrs. J. M'GlashaivW. 11. Reynolds, T. Dick, J. W. Lambert.
