Nelson, June 25th, 1858. 1190 CROIXELLES COPPER MINING V^ COMPANY. To Oswald Curtis, Esquire, Secretaay. ' ' Dear Sir — In a Report of the Meeting of the Croixelles Mining Company, published in tho Examiner, of 2nd June, it is stated that — " A good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed by some of tho Shareholders that there was no allusion in the report of the late inspection of the mines to Mr. Hacket's former survey of them, and to the very different opinion which he then formed of the Current Basin," &c. I can certainly fully comprehend the dissatisfaction of Shareholders on receiving a discouraging report ; and more particularly in this case, after such ridiculous rumours respecting the value of the mine had been spread. In reply to the above, however, I beg to state that on my former visit to the said mines, the veins cropping out at the surface of the Current Basin presented very promising appearance, containing quartz, mundic, and good stone 3of yellow copper ore at grass. I, therefore, had no hesitation in recommending strongly to the Company to make a trial of the sett, by driving sorao short levels on the veins, and particularly to explore them at their junction. I still assert that this trial was justified by the appearance of the veins; and in this assertion I am borne out by the opinion of Mr. Gibbs, who allows me to state that he would equally have recommended a trial of the veins under the circumstances, they being then entirely unexplored. My reason for "so decided a reversal of an opinion then so confidently expressed" i% that the workings since carried out have clearly proved that the veins, far from improving on entering the hill, are by no means continuous, either in their run or in depth, which has, of course, induced me to recommend the shareholders to expend no further capital in their exploration ; nor can this recommendation be exactly construed into "so decided a reversal of an opinion," as the mine at the time of my first visit was not sufficiently explored even for me to venture giving a report. I am, dear sir, Your obedient servant, (Signed) T. R. Hacket. Nelson, June 12, 1858. 1189 TO SPORTSMEN.
