THIRTEENTH BIRTHDAY
HOPE-RANZAU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Hope-Ranzau Women’s Institute suitably celebrated peace by having its 13th birthday in the same week, when nearly 100 guests were entertained. The Ranzau schoolroom was gaily decorated for the occasion, the walls with greenery and flags, and the interior with magnificent bowls of japonica and blossoms in the Institute colours of red and white. The president, Mrs Lewis, presided and welcomed the guests from women’s organisations in Nelson and surrounding districts and spoke of the pleasure it gave to see so many present. An excellent programme of musical and elocutionary items was arranged. This comprised two choruses by the Musical Circle, accompanied by Mrs Laurenson at the piano, solo by Mesdames D. Max. E. Lewis and McKendry, duets by Mesdames Max and Lewis and elocutionary items by Mrs Falls. The beautiful cake, iced in white with red candles, was made by Mrs Schroder. Mrs Tuffnell lit the candles and spoke of the good work of the Institute in wartime. She expressed the hope that members would be spurred to further activities now that victory had been celebrated, and wished the Institute many happy returns. Mrs Muggeridge extinguished the candles and extended hearty greetings. Mrs Johnston, a former president and now president of the Nelson Federation, cut the cake and in a neat speech gave advice to all members based on the words of the aspiration. She also gave greetings on behalf of the fedr eration. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses. Guest artists and speakers were presented with, shoulder sprays from the Gardening Circle. The sales table with Mrs Schroder in charge did brisk business, the funds being for sewing materials. DOVEDALE W.D.F.U. MEETING The Dovedale branch of the W.D.F.U. held its monthly meeting in the Dovedale Sunday School room where Mrs P. C. Burnett presided over a fair attenda nee. Kenyon with some pianoforte solos which were very much enjoyed. The monthly competition, article made from two skeins of wool, resulted: Miss J. Yuell 1, Mrs W. Franklyn and Miss F. Burnet 2 equal. Mrs Fowler 4. The flower competition was won by Mrs N. A. Win 1, Miss J. Yuell 2. and Mrs Eyles 3.
