MOST OF GOVERNMENT SERVICE SOME SECTIONS STILL DECLARED ESSENTIAL (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, Aug. 30 Notice of revocation of the declaration of essentiality in respect of the Government service is contained in “New Zealand Gazette” published today In drawing attention to this revocation, the Minister of Industrial Manpower Mr McLagan. referred to his recent statement regarding the intention to remove the cover of essentiality over certain industries including Government departments, before the end of September "The Government desires to give a lead in the revocation of declarations ol essentiality." said Mr McLagan. "and it has therefore decided that with a few necessary exceptions declaration over the whole’of the Government service will be lifted as from August 31st. As I indicated in my earlier announcement. there are certain Government undertakings providing essential public services or closely associated with our rehabilitation and housing programmes which cannot be immediately freed from manpower control and direction measures. The cover of essentiality is accordingly being retained in respect of the following: Mental hospitals. prisons and Borstal institutions, engineering, architectural and housing construction divisions of the Ministry of Works, and Public Works Department, and the hydro-electric division of the Public Works Department. Price Tribunal. Rehabilitation Department, second division of the Post and Telegraph Do- | partment. and the second division of the New- Zealand Railways (except the road services branch). In addition, the j declaration of essentiality will be main- | tained over the Government’s dehvdration factories by an amendment to the dee’'.ration over the canning and fruit j preserving industry, while the field staff ! of the State Forest Service will be cov- ! ered by an amendment to the declara- * tion covering forestry operations. The I sawmills operated by the State Forest j Service will remain covered under the j existing declaration in respect of the saw-milling industry. The staffing position of the above departments will be under constant review and further revocations will be made as soon as possible.”
