POST OFFICE TOWER

CITY COUNCIL “UNDER A : MISAPPREHENSION” POSTMASTER-GENERAL’S LETTER The impression given by a recent Ministerial statement that a number of Post Office clock towers, including Nelson’s, were likely to he retained, has proved false. The Postmaster-General iMr F. Jones) in a letter to yesterday’s meeting of the Nelson City Council stated that no decision had been made to allow the towers to remain. The Postmaster-General’s letter was as iollqws: "1 have to say that the question of proceeding with the removal of those clock towers still remaining on departmental bondings is at present under consideration by the Government It would appear that your c«unci! is under a misapprehension in its understanding that it lias been decided that some towers are to be allowed to remain. as no such decision has been made. "The representations of your council have been carefully noted and you may rest assured that they will receive full consideration at the appropriate time. As soon as a decision has been reached vou will be communicated with again." The Mayor (Mr E. R. Neale) : The Minister’s letter would indicate that 1 ,- e statement published in the press mcently did not reveal the true position.” The Mayor added that the actual names of the towns, including Nelson, were given in the statement to v hich he .eferred. Councillor J. Newman said the council should use every endeavour to have the tower retained and he wanted another letter sent to the PostrnasrerGeneral pointing out that there as a strong body of opinion in the city that the tower should not be removed. On the motion of Councillor Newman. seconded by Councillor F. H. Sharland. it was decided to again write to the Postmaster-General on the subject.

Councillor S. I. Russell had his vote recorded against the motion.
