That had been unavoid, able, but the position would have to be rectifle I as soon as possible and that could be done only by hard work wi’h a young and virile population. The Government should give a lead on that vital question, said Mr Acland Assistance should be given to the family man and woman, who had carried a heavy burden The family man the man with three or four children — had suffered to a greater extent than any other section of the community The net gain of a rise of 10s 6d a 'week to the single man was 9s. but the man with a wife and four children bene fited only to the extent of about Is 6d for each member of the family and’ the increase did not cover the extra living costs. The Government's 'duty was to give additional assistance t* working men with families.
