In the evening. visiting players and their supporters were officially welcomed by the mayor. Mr Appleton. A. Bowie (Te Kuiti) had to play with determination to keep ahead of F. Higgins ( Westport) in the first game of the day and eventually ran to points 666 with Higgins at 644. The latter fell back at the start, and it was not till near the i end that he began to wipe off the deficiency, but the final burst was made toe la*e. An early lead established by A. Two- j hill (Gr?y mouth) was maintained till j the 600-mark in his game against E.V. Roberts (Auckland) in the afternoon, but enterprising play by the latter I brought him nearly even, but Twohill j managed to keep ahead and won by 666 ! to 616. j In the evening J. S. Sheppard, the 1 Auckland champion played consistently and had no difficulty in beating W. O'Neill (Runanga) by 666 to 400.
